How to Create the Dreamiest Botanical Boho Living Room

One of my favourite interior decor styles has to be Bohemian.  Why? Because to me it feels super homey but also in a way luxurious.  Your living area can turn into a dreamy, luscious space you won’t want to leave.

From plants, to poofs, different textures, layered rugs, and lush pillows – what more could you ask for in a living room if you are looking for a space that gives off relaxed, chill, stay a while vibes?

Hey don’t get me wrong, I love a good contemporary look, and combining different styles is what I do often with my clients. However, when a living room has too many straight lines, too many of the same textures, it gets boring and it’s not a place where I want to cozy up and watch a movie with my cat.

So here are a few tips on how you can create a Boho inspired living room based on your truest Pinterest dreams.

1.     Neutral or Earth Toned Walls/Finishes

If you’re moving into a new place and have no idea where to start with your living room, the first thing to do is start with the paint colour for your walls.

Because bohemian living can be both pretty busy and vibrant, I suggest starting with a neutral toned wall such as white, light grey, or light beige.

You don’t want the focus of the room to be on the wall colour, you want it to be on all the beautiful different pieces you have in it!

2.     Layered Rugs

One of my favourite ways to add texture in the room is by layering rugs, whether that be in the living room, dining room or bedroom!

A few tips on layering your rugs is to start out with a natural fiber rug on the bottom and then a patterned or a distressed/vintage rug on top.

Or you can also combine multiple rugs of the same colour family together, which could be of any colour, beige, red, green, it’s up to you.

I’ve recently been in love with mixing Moroccan rugs with cow hide rugs, and currently have that in my living room.

3. Use an Assortment of Different Patterns and Textures

As mentioned previously, bohemian style is all about mixing and NOT matching.

So throw in some velvet pillows, natural fiber rugs, sheepskin rugs, macramé wall hangings, and a big knit blanket and you are good to go.

4.     Poofs or Low-Level Seating

Can you just picture you and a few of your friends sitting in the living room relaxing, drinking some tea while hanging out on some floor pillows and/or poofs?

This tip gives the room a “stay a while and connect with me” kind of vibe that I absolutely live for, which is exactly what boho philosophy is all about!

5.     Add Lots of Plants

Not only are plants good for you but you simply cannot have a bohemian inspired living room without a collection of plants!

Have you even seen a photo on Pinterest that claims to be boho without at least 5 plants in the photo? Seriously the more the merrier.  And any space that is flowing with nature = good freaking vibes.

Pro Tip: When choosing planters, find some of different heights/styles to keep it extra interesting!

Here are some gorgeous planters, click on the pic and it takes you to West Elm.

6.     Macramé Wall Hangings

Not only can you have textures on surfaces, but you can also add them to your walls.

By doing so you give a cohesive, well rounded look that you may be going for.

Macrame is often used in beautiful throw pillows so by adding another macramé item to your walls, your living room will be bursting with cozy texture.

7.     Use Different Light Sources

Candles, a weave pendant, hanging fairy lights and a spunky floor lamp.  Keep it diverse with different light sources in the living room but one thing is important and that is to keep them in the natural colour range.

8.     Accent Wall Pattern

This last tip is for those who enjoy a more natural boho look, with lots of whites, beiges and greys.

Having an accent wall is perfect for those who are not looking for a pop of colour in the actual pieces of their furniture but are looking for that pop on the walls!

As always, I hope that you enjoyed this blog post and that you took away some of these tips and maybe even implemented them into your home! If you did, leave a comment and I would love to see for myself.
